The 19′s are an exploration of sand casting technique. Essentially a shape is pressed into sand to create a void, and metal is roughly poured into the void. Some “overspill” is a by-product of this process, which is, in conventional circumstance, cleaned up after production and re-finished.
Instead, in this project we explored the expressive possibilities of the “overspill” giving the piece a phenomenological identity.
In the 19′s, a large and generous overspill is encouraged during the production process, which is designed to occur at the rim of each bowl. The brass overflows around the perimeter of the bowl in a completely unpredictable manner, making each piece completely unique from any other ever made.
19′s are made of recycled brass at the oldest foundry on the West Coast of Canada, located in East Vancouver. The ‘overspill’ oxidizes instantly during the pour, producing a highly textured surface which stands in contrast to the interior of the bowl surface, which is polished to a near mirror finish.
Music by Brasstronaut
Video by Gwenael Lewis and Geoff Hunt
Sound Mixing by Post Modern Sound

I’d never raced the Gorrick 100 at Swinley Forrest before, but as I arrived early sunday morning I was quite excited. After chatting with my racing buddies I lined up on the second row, the klaxon went and i got a flying start, easily within the top 10 entering the first bit of single track, I took it steady as it was slightly slippery, i left the single track and headed out along a muddy part of fire road, I had another rider to my left and decided to overtake through a puddle……..

The next thing I know i’m on the floor, feeling very dazed and disorientated. Two racing buddies stop to check on me, they show obvious concern and call for the ambulance, turns out the puddle was hiding a foot deep hole! The next few hours sees me bundled of to hospital strapped to a board in a neck collar, I had two x-ray and a CT scan before they gave me the all clear 5-uncomfortable-hours later. I’m now left with a black eye and bad gravel rash on my face and knees, but still, could have been a lot worse.

My plan is still to race Erlestoke 12 in three weeks time, it was my first big win last year and i’d like to defend my title, but time will tell what I decide for definite.

This week we’ve got three fantastic videos from British Council Film, starting with this great film that our friend, and crowd funding backer, Helen Cox sent us a link to yesterday…enjoy!

A Bicycle Factory
‘The process of manufacture is traced from the beginning; the design on paper and the raw materials. We see what goes to make the steel tubes of the frames, the handle bars, the gear wheels, the pedal cranks, the pedals, the spokes, the wheels and the hubs, until at last the complete bicycle is ready for testing.’
(Films of Britain – British Council Film Department Catalogue – 1946)

The Achievements of British Industry
‘British goods retain their traditional quality. The same pride of craftsmanship goes to make articles of peace and weapons of war. Whilst aircraft factories turn out Spitfires and Hurricanes, the workers of Sheffield and the weavers of Witney still turn out the world’s most famous knives and blankets.’
(Films of Britain – British Council Film Department Catalogue – 1944-45)

The Life of a Typical Yorkshire Family
‘A young Yorkshireman describes the life led by his family, who all work in the great woolen mills of the district. Their work is shown and their recreations, which include football, music, amateur theatricals and cycling over the beautiful countryside. They all love singing, and the film ends with the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah which is traditional in the West Riding.’
(Films of Britain – British Council Film Department Catalogue – 1946)’
